Recognize the concern
Frequent box visits, straining, vocalizing, licking or producing little or no urine can indicate obstruction.
- Treat inability to urinate as an emergency
- Call ahead and leave promptly
- Tell the clinic when urine was last observed
- Mention vomiting, weakness or collapse
Do not manipulate the abdomen
Pressure or home remedies cannot safely relieve a urinary obstruction.
- Do not press or massage the belly
- Do not give medication without direction
- Do not confuse urinary straining with constipation
- Do not wait for a routine appointment
Prepare the history
Accurate context helps the clinic prepare.
- Sex and age of the cat
- Previous urinary problems
- Diet and medication
- Timing and number of litter-box attempts
