05
Cookies and similar technologies
Cookies are small files or identifiers stored through a browser. Catopedia may use the following categories:
Essential
Support core functions, security, spam prevention, consent records and administration. These cannot always be disabled through Catopedia.
Preferences
Remember choices such as language, region, accessibility or display preferences when those features are available.

Help measure visits and understand site performance. Where required, optional analytics activate only after an appropriate consent choice.
You can control cookies through your browser and, where available, Catopedia’s cookie settings. Blocking some technologies may affect website functionality.
06
Analytics, advertising and data sales
Catopedia may use analytics services to understand aggregated website use, such as popular pages, device categories and general traffic sources. Analytics providers may process identifiers and technical information according to their own terms and Catopedia’s configuration.
Catopedia does not sell personal information or share it for cross-context behavioral advertising.
If advertising or materially different tracking practices are introduced, this policy and any required consent or opt-out controls will be updated before or when those practices begin.
07
Legal bases for processing
Where laws such as the GDPR or UK GDPR require a legal basis, Catopedia relies on one or more of the following depending on the activity:
Consent
For optional cookies, communications or another activity when consent is requested. Consent can be withdrawn for future processing.
Legitimate interests
To operate, improve and secure Catopedia, answer ordinary inquiries and prevent abuse, balanced against visitors’ rights.
Contract or requested steps
When processing is necessary to provide a requested service or respond before entering an arrangement.
Legal obligations
To comply with law, respond to lawful requests, maintain required records or establish and defend legal claims.
08
When information may be shared
Catopedia does not disclose personal information simply because it is collected. Information may be provided to limited recipients when reasonably necessary:
•
Hosting, content-delivery and infrastructure providers that operate or protect the website.
•
Form, email, backup and security providers that process submissions or maintain systems.
•
Analytics providers when enabled under applicable consent and configuration requirements.
•
Professional advisers such as legal, accounting, insurance or security specialists where necessary.
•
Authorities or other parties when legally required or reasonably necessary to protect rights, safety, security or website integrity.
•
A successor organization in a genuine restructuring, financing, sale or transfer, subject to appropriate safeguards.
Service providers are expected to use information only for the services they provide or as otherwise permitted by law.
09
International data transfers
Catopedia serves an international audience and may use providers located in Canada, the United States or other countries. As a result, personal information may be processed outside the country where it was collected and may be subject to the laws of the processing location.
Where required, Catopedia uses recognized transfer mechanisms or contractual and organizational safeguards designed to protect personal information. You may contact Catopedia for more information about safeguards relevant to a particular request.
10
How long information is retained
Catopedia retains personal information only as long as reasonably necessary for the purpose collected, security, dispute resolution and applicable legal obligations. Retention periods vary by record type, purpose and legal requirement.
Information may be retained longer when reasonably required by law, fraud prevention, security investigation, litigation hold or the establishment or defense of legal claims. It may be deleted or anonymized earlier when no longer needed.
11
Information security
Catopedia uses reasonable administrative, technical and organizational measures intended to protect personal information against unauthorized access, loss, misuse, alteration or disclosure. Measures may include access controls, encrypted connections, backups, security monitoring, software updates and service-provider controls.
No system is risk-free
Internet transmission and electronic storage always involve risk. Catopedia cannot guarantee absolute security, but will assess incidents and provide legally required notifications where applicable.

Children’s privacy
Catopedia is a general-audience educational website and is not designed to require children to create accounts or publicly post personal information. We do not knowingly request personal information from children where parental or guardian authorization is legally required.
If local law requires parental or guardian consent for a young person to submit personal information, the submission should not be made without that authorization. A parent or guardian who believes a child provided personal information improperly may contact Catopedia to request review and deletion.
14
Third-party links and embedded services
Catopedia may link to breed registries, veterinary resources, research, breeders, rescues, social networks or other independent websites. Clicking a link or interacting with embedded third-party content may allow that third party to collect information under its own privacy policy.
A link or directory listing does not make Catopedia responsible for another organization’s privacy, security or content. Review the third party’s policy before providing personal information.
15
Changes to this policy
This policy may be updated as Catopedia adds features, changes providers, introduces directories or communications, or responds to legal and operational developments. The effective or review date at the top will be revised when appropriate.
Material changes may also be highlighted on the website or through another reasonable notice. Continued use after an update is subject to the revised policy, except where fresh consent is legally required.
