The Aegean is best understood as a regional cat population shaped by life around Greek islands and coastal communities. It is often described as medium-sized, athletic and adaptable, with a semi-long coat and a large proportion of white combined with black, blue, red or cream markings. Because the population developed naturally rather than from a narrowly closed show-breeding program, individual appearance can be more variable than visitors expect from a standardized pedigree breed.
The name is sometimes used loosely for Greek cats with similar looks. That does not mean every white-and-colored cat photographed in Greece is a documented Aegean, nor can ancestry be proven from appearance. Catopedia distinguishes the landrace description from claims of registry status. Major bodies such as CFA, TICA and GCCF do not currently list the Aegean among their recognized championship breeds.
